Nine boundaries, one planet

The Planetary Health Check 2025 tracks nine Earth-system processes. The radial diagram shows control variables relative to the safe ring — and how far we have pushed past it.

overview

Seven of nine breached

As of PHC 2025, seven boundaries are transgressed. Aerosol loading and ozone remain within the safe space — rare proof that coordinated policy can work.

climate

Climate change

Atmospheric CO₂ sits at 423 ppm — far above the 350 ppm boundary — and radiative forcing is about twice the high-risk threshold. The Arctic warms roughly three times faster than the global average.

biosphere

Biosphere integrity

Extinction rates sit far above the safe band, and humans now appropriate about 30% of net primary production — triple the 10% boundary. Tropical frontiers from the Amazon to Borneo illustrate the pressure.

particles-earth

Earth as a system

Cut into the particles surface — a Lab-gated morph that dissolves orbit into landscape shapes. Spectacle stays behind VisualizationPort; Discover still defaults to globe and map.

freshwater

Freshwater change

More than a fifth of land now shows abnormal streamflow and soil-moisture deviations — roughly twice the pre-industrial baseline. Basins such as the Indo-Gangetic Plain illustrate the stress.

ocean

Ocean acidification

Surface aragonite saturation has fallen just past the revised boundary. For the first time, PHC 2025 classifies ocean acidification as transgressed — the seventh breached limit.

ozone

Ozone — a rare recovery

Stratospheric ozone is stable and slowly recovering thanks to the Montreal Protocol. Hemispheric aerosol differences are also shrinking. These are leverage points: science and policy can restore a boundary.

synthesis

Still within reach

We are at the upper edge of the planetary boundary safe zone — but still within reach of a safe future. The diagram is a reading aid; the evidence lives in the PHC report and peer-reviewed literature.

Observe

Return to orbit

Stories choreograph the world shell — they do not replace it. Open Discover to inspect places and actors on the same VisualizationPort.
